Web Site Hosting - You Get What You Pay For
Quality web hosting service for your website is very important, especially if you plan on marketing your website online. If you are an internet marketer it is important to find a web host with a good balance of uptime, features, and affordability. Website uptime and speed is actually one of the many factors that can affect your search engine ranking in google and others! Here are some tips in selecting a web host:
- The Truth about “Unlimited” Hosts
When searching for a web host you are going to be bombarded with web hosts that claim they offer “Unlimited” storage space and bandwidth, and for very cheap. To be perfectly blunt, these companies are lying to you. It is not possible to offer an unlimited storage space or bandwidth transfer. These companies are not only deceptive, but they are also over sellers; they are overselling their servers for a quick buck. Most “unlimited” hosts are in business under 2 years before they go down (as well as all the sites they host). Stay clear from unlimited hosts.
- The Smaller, The Better
It has been my experience, and the consensus of other web designers, that the smaller the web host company, the better. Smaller companies will know you by name, and not by customer or order number. They will know you on a personal level and be able to assist you differently than larger companies. They are easier to work with, easier to get support from when you need it, and usually even cheaper.
- You Pay What You Get For
Remember there is a fine line between quality and quantity in the web hosting world. You truly will get what you pay for; if it sounds too good to be true, then it is. Web hosting packages can range anymore from a few bucks a month all the way up to twenty bucks a month. Shop around and try to select a host that falls in that median price range, in the $7 to $8 range (depending on the features you need). Stay clear from any hosting that is cheaper than $3 a month; this is a dead give-a-way of a reseller host, or an over seller. There service will simply lack the quality you deserve.
- Features, Features, Features!
Shop around and find a host that offers all of the features you desire. Some features that are a necessity are e-mail hosting, web mail, PHP, MySQL, web site backups, 24/7 support, FTP access, multi-domain support, web site statistics, and an online control panel. These are *VERY* basic features that any web host is expected to offer. Do not even consider a web host that lacks any of these features.
- Full-Service Providers
I would recommend choosing a full-service web host provider. You can find some hosts that also provide domain registration and web design! Our recommended host is Eilers Marketing Group, located in Grand Rapids Michigan (Grand Rapids Web Design) serving clients globally. The advantage of choosing a full-service provider is so that you have all your services under one roof and one company. It makes things smoother, easier to setup, and easier to manage.
